CIBSE wants to raise the profile of building services engineering (24/01/2007)
The Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) aims to raise the profile of building services engineering through a range of career activities including a series of new factsheets.
Designed specifically for students and graduates, the 'Make a Difference Factsheets' promote the benefits of working within the industry and provide clear guidance on how to get a foot on the building services career ladder.
They make a clear statement to young people about the power of building services engineers to rise to the challenge of climate change through energy efficient design, installation and maintenance, as well as through technologies for waste, water and drainage.
The launch event took place at a reception at the House of Commons held with the All Party Building Services Group and hosted by Nick Raynsford MP. Over 100 guests attended as CIBSE President David Hughes took the opportunity to appeal for more 'joined up thinking' from the Government and for support to be provided to the building services sector in order to strengthen and protect the supply chain to the industry.
Mr Hughes said: "In a time when skills shortages are a real issue, reaching out to students and graduates is vital and must be done now to ensure the future of building services. CIBSE hopes that these factsheets will Make a Difference and highlight the potential that the industry holds."
Future factsheets will cover craft and technician career pathways and routes into the profession for mature entrants. Ongoing career initiatives within the Institution include a role model section on the CIBSE website and the development of the Young Engineers Group.
