Total Electrical Training has announced that it will be offering City & Guilds courses based on the 17th edition of the IEE Wiring Regulations (BS 7671:2008) from January 2008. With course dates extending well into the end of 2008, bookings for the range of courses addressing the 17th edition are now being taken. The company is also offering special update courses for existing 16th edition certificate holders who can show that they have taken the exam within the last two years.

Because the 17th edition was published on January 1, 2008, all industrial, domestic and commercial electricians will need to comply with the new regulations as of June 1st 2008. As a result, all electricians, whether they are working in the industrial, commercial or in the domestic sector, will need to demonstrate a complete understanding of the new wiring regulations, something which the City & Guilds certificate offered by Total Electrical Training achieves.

"In England the regulations are endorsed by the Health & Safety Executive, but in Scotland they are legislative measures," explained George Wilson, Total Electrical Training's technical director. "Both kinds of enforcement provide a very good reason to comply but the ultimate motive is that the 17th edition is intended to improve standards of electrical safety in installations".

Wilson went on to explain, "The introduction of the 17th edition represents the biggest change that the industry faces." When asked about the implications for the electrical installation industry, Wilson commented, "All electricians must commit themselves to obtaining the necessary certificates, which show that they are more than aware of the 17th edition wiring regulations."

Wilson commented further on the speculation concerning the demand for training in the early part of 2008. "There is no doubt that we, alongside our colleagues in other training providers will be busy, as the introduction of the 17th edition will create the most significant demand for training since the introduction of Part P. However, our flexible training approach and the number of facilities we have across the UK, means that getting onto one of our 17th edition training courses will not be a problem."

In addition, Total Electrical Training will also be delivering the new 2392 inspection and testing qualification and the new 2393 series of qualifications for Part P; all of these are in the process of accreditation, which is anticipated by City & Guilds, to be in the early spring of 2008.
