Schneider Electric UK powers largest wind farm to be constructed in Europe (19/01/2007)
Large wind farms are vital to meeting the UK’s ambitious renewable energy targets. There are currently 125 wind farms in the UK and 100 projects have planning consent.
Schneider Electric UK has won an order to supply all of the 33kV switchgear for Whitelee wind farm in Scotland. When completed, Whitelee will be the largest on shore wind farm in Europe with a generating capacity of approximately 322MW, equivalent to 150 000 homes. It will comprise of 140 2.3MW turbines and will save about 170,000 tons of CO2 annually.
Schneider Electric UK will supply CBGS-0 switchgear fitted with Sepam protection and control relays for the main 33kV switchboards, as well as CAS-36 switchgear.
Whitelee wind farm will be located on a vast stretch of high ground south of Glasgow, Scotland. The project should be completed by 2009, with construction at the site having started in summer 2006, and the first turbine expected to be operational in 2008.
