Moss Electrical Co Ltd has teamed up with industry partner Bardic to ensure its new Dartford premises contains state of the art fire protection equipment.

Industrial projects often require complicated systems and Moss Electrical’s new £10 million, 150,000 sq ft warehouse facility is no exception. To meet the stringent requirements of the Moss project, Bardic has installed a number of smoke detection devices including flashing beacons.

Moss Electrical’s Managing Director, Robert Moss said Bardic was a natural choice for the work. “We have equipped our new warehouse to the highest specification. We have supplied Bardic products for a number of years now and the quality of work they have carried out on our new facility is superb.”

The project took less than three months to complete with Bardic, specifying, installing and modifying the system to meet Moss’ requirements as David Slater, Bardic’s Area Sales Manager for London and the South East explains, “We worked closely with Moss Electrical to understand their requirements; this ensured that Bardic provided the best solutions to meet all their fire protection needs”.

Products installed include Bardic optical smoke detectors incorporating a pulsing infra-red LED located in a chamber within the housing of the detector. The chamber is designed to exclude light from any external source. At an angle to the LED is a photo-diode which normally does not register the column of light emitted by the LED.

In the event of smoke entering the chamber, the light pulse from the LED will be scattered and registered by the photo-diode. If the photo-diode "sees" smoke on the two following pulses, the detector changes into alarm state and the indicator LED lights up.

As smoke enters the detector, particles become attached to the ions, causing a reduction in current flow in the outer chamber and hence an increase in voltage measured at the junction between the two chambers. The voltage increase is monitored by the electronic circuitry which triggers the detector into the alarm state at a preset threshold. An externally visible red LED lights up when the detector changes to alarm state.

Moss Electrical’s new Dartford warehouse will open in January 2008. The electrical goods wholesaler is one of the largest single site, independent wholesalers in the UK, with over 14,000 product lines and one of the most extensive stock profiles in the industry. The new warehouse means customers will benefit from even greater service terms of support and response.
