LED luminaires that emit no heat or UV radiation illuminate Daguerreotype exhibition (16/08/2007)
Daguerreotypes, the first photographic pictures on highly polished silver-coated copper plates, have fascinated people of all ages since the French state acquired the patent in August 1839. At the time, critics denounced the pictures as mechanical and therefore dead. Today they are incredibly lively and evocative witnesses to the early days of photography. They are wide open windows that look out on an epoch that has long since gone.
The "Traces of light from the past – Daguerreotypes from Swiss collections, 1840 to 1860" exhibition in the Winterthur museum of photography is the first time that these rare images from one of the most significant private collections in Europe have been put on show. The exhibition is special not only because of the large number of rare photographs but also because of the way in which they are displayed.
Special LED luminaires from OSRAM that emit no heat or UV radiation are arranged at such an angle to the daguerreotypes that the images appear as positive images with exceptional richness of detail and tonality. The DRAGONeye LEDs used in these luminaires, together with the integrated lens, illuminate the exhibits with great accuracy without affecting the neighboring objects.
