Assessing the impact of the impending waste electrical and electronic equipment Directive on local authorities

The impact of the impending waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) Directive on local authorities is the focus of London Remade’s first local authority network meeting in 2007, on 26 February.
Using feedback obtained directly from local authority officers and the enhance business development programme’s research, this event will contemplate the WEEE Directive and the impact it will have on London’s local authorities.
Hugh Smith, Programme Manager, London Remade, said: “There are some big decisions to be made about WEEE in 2007. There are about 170,000 tonnes of WEEE generated in London each year. London Remade is trying to help the capital’s local authorities make informed decisions about the options available to them and what the implications of the directive will mean.”
Hugh Smith will present a summary of the recently published enhance research on WEEE flows in London, highlighting what this means for local authorities and businesses in the capital.
Jeanne Grey, Assistant Director of the WEEE Implementation Team, Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), will provide an overview of the WEEE Directive and the implications for local authorities.
Jeff Cooper, Policy Manager, Environment Agency, will give a presentation about designated collection facilities, discussing what local authorities need to do to have a designated collection facility, the registration process and permitting requirements.
John Hayes, General Manager, European Recycling Platform Ireland, will be sharing his experience of how the WEEE Directive has been implemented in Ireland, highlighting some of the successes and pitfalls.
Paul James, General Manager – Environmental Department, DHL, will present on the WEEE Directive from the perspective of a compliance scheme, explaining how local authorities and compliance schemes can work together.
The speakers will be available for questions in the panel discussion after ther presentations.
The meeting will conclude with time to network over wine and canapés, with leading compliance schemes and WEEE recyclers and processors exhibiting at the event.
