UPS Systems ensures continuous power supply for critical life safety systems with its new PowerPro EL static inverter range (14/05/2012)
UPS Systems has launched a new range of high performance static inverters, aimed at the security industry.
The inverters ensure central power supplies used to provide a source of independent power for security equipment, such as emergency lighting and other essential safety equipment are maintained and that life safety systems operate effectively.
The PowerPro EL range of inverters has been designed to meet stringent new European emergency lighting legislation (EN 50171) covering systems permanently connected to AC supply voltages and that use batteries as an alternative power source.
UPS Systems Managing Director, Tom Sperrey, explained, Its essential that security systems remain operable during a power failure. Emergency lighting systems are prone to high inrushes and power surges above normal operating currents. They simply cant afford to fail. Our new range of inverters has improved continuous overload and higher rated battery charger characteristics which go above and beyond the requirements laid out in EN 50171 legislation.
Sperrey continued, The legislation is very clear. Lighting systems must be tested every three to six months. Every year the batteries must be fully discharged and provide three hours of runtime. This is why we have deliberately oversized our battery systems by 20 percent.
EN 50171
The new inverter range meets emergency lighting requirements, supporting a 120 percent continuous overload. Batteries are required to attain an 80 percent recharge rate within 12 hours under the legislation. This new range of static inverters has been specified with larger chargers to achieve this.
Modular design improves repair time
The PowerPro EL100XA Series has been designed with modular lighting systems in mind, such as those used with modern LED lighting. This type of system ensures that a load can be spread across a number of smaller systems, rather than rely on a traditional central battery system with a single point of failure.
This type of design also reduces the mean time to repair (MTTR) to approximately 30 minutes or less which is essential for the continuity of life safety systems. In the unlikely event of an inverter fault, the internal modular design allows the swap-out of components without causing further disruption to essential security systems.
