Borri protects South Central Ambulance Service against power outages (04/11/2009)
Located in Bicester, South Central Ambulance Service (SCAS)’s new headquarters brings together its senior management team and the people managing the ambulances services in Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire. It is anticipated that the centralisation will improve performance by 20%.
When SCAS moved into its new headquarters it was aware of the importance ensuring that all essential equipment, such as computers and communications were protected against power outages. Contractors, Cannock Electrical & Mechanical knew that Borri had the technical know-how to design and install a state-of-the-art power support system to support this critical application.
Following a detailed survey of the building by Borri engineers it was agreed that fitting a critical power network would involve the installation of two 160 kVA UPS systems working in parallel, together with a 300kVA diesel generator, AMF and switchgear.
The power support system ensures clean and consistent electric power demanded by sensitive equipment and helps protect against power spikes and brownouts. Should a power failure occur, the generator takes over before the batteries of the UPS run out, smoothly transferring the network over as part of the standby power system. When mains power returns, the software will automatically switch back to conventional power after it has ensured that the power will remain constant.
"Borri won the tender by not only providing the most competitive price but also on their proven track record", said Lee Garbett, Operations Manager at Cannock Electrical & Mechanical. "SCAS is delighted with the installation which was undertaken proficiently and on schedule”.
