The Sustainable Energy Academy (SEA) is a UK registered charity, founded in 1982, to advance the knowledge and application of energy efficiency and renewable energy. To demonstrate how best to improve the energy efficiency of older dwellings, it has set up a network of exemplar energy efficient houses around the country, which are easily accessible to local residents. It believes that the ‘Old Home, Superhome’ project will help homeowners and local authorities to get hands-on knowledge and be inspired to transform their own properties.

The ‘Old Home, Superhome’ project is supported by SEA’s education and research programmes, as well as a knowledge resource providing details of technologies, costs and techniques available to all homeowners.

Megaman is supporting the Sustainable Energy Academy in the UK charity’s efforts to promote better energy efficiencies in buildings and communities. The manufacturer, which sells about 20 million compact fluorescent lamps per year in Britain alone, is sponsoring SEA financially as well as providing energy saving lighting products for it’s current ‘Old Home, Superhome’ programme at sites around the UK.

John Murphy Managing Director of Megaman UK, believes the new partnership will be demonstrably beneficial to both parties. He comments: “SEA and Megaman share a number of common goals, not least to get the techniques of making energy savings in the home better known and practiced by homeowners. As most of the housing in the UK is over a certain age, specifically showing how to make older properties more energy efficient will be of great benefit to all”.

“In terms of lighting, while the potential savings are a little smaller than those possible with heating and electric appliances, real savings can be made. For the same light output, energy saving light bulbs use up to 80 per cent less electricity than standard filament bulbs, and it has been estimated that if every household in the UK fitted just three energy saving bulbs, in a year we would save enough electricity to supply all the street lighting in the UK. Depending on how long domestic lights are in use every day, using just one energy saving bulb could save the householder up to £7 a year off the electricity bill”.

John Doggart, SEA’s Chairman, is equally pleased with the Megaman association. He says: “ Having the support of a major manufacturer in this area is very helpful to us, particularly as the products Megaman make are absolutely pertinent to our core goals. To combat climate change, we do need to reduce our global carbon footprint by 60% across the board. To achieve this with older housing the choice is simple: either we transform our houses or demolish them with all the consequent cost, disruption and loss of amenity. Educating householders as to what can be achieved at reasonable cost is a key requirement and we are well on our way to achieving this”.
