iLight controls lighting in new Science Museum centre (02/03/2007)
The Smith Centre at London's Science Museum is a brand new £1 million facility, funded by the Martin Smith Foundation, designed to bring together scientists, policy makers, business people and the public in rooms displaying special exhibitions of the museum's treasures.
Recently opened by Her Majesty the Queen, the Centre required flexible lighting controls to display exhibits to their full advantage, as well as offering a variety of ambiances for scientific meetings and business functions.
The Smith Centre uses iLight lighting controls throughout. The lighting system was designed and installed by DJW (DJ Willrich Ltd), the Hampshire-based audio visual and multimedia systems integrator. Energy efficient controls were included for all the Centre's rooms, which include a gallery, Fellows room and Patrons room. In the Fellows room, the lighting was integrated with a boardroom control system.
"For the lighting control we chose iLight products throughout due to their flexibility, ease of programming and competitive cost," said DJW managing director David Willrich.
To achieve the desired effects, a full range of lighting types were used: fluorescent, incandescent, halogen and LED. This necessitated a range of iLight dimmer modules, including two iCAN inductive source controller modules and an iCAN HF ballast controller.
For energy efficiency, PIR sensors were used in the low volume rooms, including the kitchen and pantry, while a time clock was used to change automatically between night and daytime scenes.
